It was 2003 when the designer duo of Stefan Borselius and Fredrik Mattson penned the design of the Sting chair for Blå Station. Nearly 20 years later, Sting is back. What this means is that you get to deck your office with a stackable and connectable chair that takes very less space for storage and offers a lot more comfort.
Thanks to the plastic attachment at the bottom of the chair leg, which helps in linking the chairs together in rows. Weighing 6kg, each chair stacks up to 50 pieces in a trolley, thus making it easy to store away when not in use. “Sting has that perfect tilt of the backrest,” claims Blå Station while commenting on how ergonomic it could possibly be.
As far as the design is concerned, the Swedish company decided to opt for the same exact profile for the furniture as their previous design in 2003. Calling it the world’s most innovative chair with very precise graphic language, Bla Station has taken the sustainability route this year.
The legs of the chair are made using stainless steel while the backrest is made from 90-percent recycled aluminum. The aluminum is sourced from reused materials processed at Hydro’s re-melting facility in Sjunnen, Sweden.
Talking to Homecrux, Fredrik Mattson said, “We were fascinated by the technique behind extruded aluminum. Me and Stefan Borselius are trained cabinet-makers from the beginning, so we have a good understanding of materials and details.”
He further added, “The key problem to solve was to fix the back and the seat, since the seat shell must be divided due to the size of the mould (there are no machines in the world big enough to press the whole shell in one piece). We solved the problem with a delicate “Japanese joinery knot”, where all three parts (leg, back, seat) locks itself in place and also locks the construction. No screws are needed, it is all about precision.”

Blå Station mentions the Sting chair is suited for both indoor and outdoor settings, but I’d personally recommend it to be used indoors as it blends pretty well with the interior. Available in multiple customization options (with a number of seat pads and a writing table), the chair design comes with or without an armrest.
