As a child, I would see my grandmother upcycling old clothes into quilts, pillow covers, or just stuffing them to make a cushion. That memory of watching her do so has stuck with me well into adulthood. I always found the practice fascinating and wanted to do it myself, but with today’s fast-paced lifestyle, finding time to do the same is incredibly tricky.

For people like me, who want to take up such grandma hobbies, the Stuffable Pouf offers a less time-consuming approach. It is an upcycling pouf that turns your spare textiles into your favorite spot to sit. It is the perfect starting point to begin upcycling your old clothes into something useful.

The Stuffable is a pouf you fill yourself: all you need is the pouf casing and old clothes you no longer fit in or blankets that are falling off the seams. The Stuffable pouf gives someone like me a chance to create something from discarded textiles, making my grandmother proud while taking care of the overflowing closet.

But there is a catch. When stuffing the Stuffable pouf, you can’t just pick whatever you have lying around and put it in. The pouf only works with soft materials, not something with hard edges. You can’t throw in things willy-nilly; you have to be methodological about it.

Select the soft items like towels and blankets, or winter clothing without any hardware, and roll them tightly, like how some people pack their travel suitcases. Not me, but all right. Next, add the rolled textiles around the outer edge to define a round shape. Once the edges are firmly set, fill in the center. The more you overstuff, the plumper the results you get.

Made from reinforced faux leather and heavy-duty zippers, the pouf handles everyday use like a champ. But that’s not what intrigued me about the Stuffable pouf. While it works great as a solution to upcycle old clothes into functional furniture, it can also serve as a storage item, holding your winter clothing or bedding right in the living room, where no one will suspect a thing. Tell me you already don’t love that idea.

Moreover, the pouf casing is water-resistant, making it easy to handle spills and everyday clumsiness. When it is empty, you can fold it flat for storage. This makes it perfect for dorms and frequent movers.

I am sitting in anticipation of getting this upcycling pouf as soon as it is launched. If you, too, like the idea of Stuffable’s creation, it is on Kickstarter for crowdfunding. Early backers can leverage 15 to 40 percent discounts on the retail price of $132, so go ahead and begin your way to recycling old clothes.
