Forget the Barkitecture competition, to hell with an off-grid dog house on wheels, and erase all the cached memories of cozy pet furniture you’ve seen in the past. Tesla is marching its way into the realm of pet furniture and accessories. To begin with, the company’s Chinese counterpart has unveiled a Tesla Cybertruck-inspired multifunctional cat litter box that costs a trivial $12.

I know it sounds crazy and reads even bizarre, but Elon Musk has built a career doing things that are absurd and ludicrous at first and slowly become a cult. Twitter blue subscription for example! While there is no doubt that the Tesla cat litter box is a PR stunt to popularize the iconic design of Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck electric pickup truck, it doesn’t imply that the company hasn’t paid attention to the litter box design, and released it out of the blue. Or has it?

When I heard of Tesla unveiling a Cybertruck-inspired litter box, I at least expected some edgy stainless steel structure loaded with world-class features, but all we get is a flat-pack cardboard box that our in-house DIYers would have designed better. Pun intended! Secondly, the pet accessory is touted as a litter box, but it seems more apt to sleep than to poop in.

I quite cannot make it whether this is a genuinely good product, a troll of some sort, or an expression of whimsy, which Tesla and Musk are known for. Whatever the case, the design looks horrendous, to be honest.

The pictures of the cat litter box show a semi-open Cybertruck-esque design constructed in three layers of moisture-proof corrugated paper. Inside you have five layer moisture-proof thick corrugated paper which doubles as a cat scratcher. This I see as the only positive from a usability standpoint. It would have been better if Tesla had sold this as a scratching pad instead of vending it as a litter box.

Nevertheless, the Tesla cat litter box measures 22 inches long and is ideal for sleeping small and mid-sized cats. It can bear up to 33 lbs of weight, which is not bad for a piece of cardboard! Once it reaches your door, you’d need to assemble it yourself. Good luck with that!
