Although DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a technology that aims to stop or limit the use of a certain digital content in order to avoid piracy, the DRM chair uses the same concept and becomes unusable after sitting on it for eight times. A team of designers namely Gianfranco Baechtold, Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier, Thibault Brevet, Raphaël Constantin, Lionel Dalmazzini, Edina Desboeufs, Arthur Desmet, and, Thomas Grogan have created the DRM chair as their final entry in ‘The Deconstruction’, which is a global design competition.

This chair self-destroys once it’s been sat upon eight times. A simple mechanism is applied in making it. Whenever somebody sits on the chair, the sensor attached to it activates the counter, which reduces its number each time. Finally, as the counter signals zero, the self destruct system is activated. The electric current induces some kind of smoking reaction in the chemical present in the structural joints of the chair due to which they melt. After a few seconds you’ll see the furniture piece collapses.

Given below is the video showing how the DRM chair destroys itself.
