Every now and then we see examples of classic and old items being made available in portable versions. But their are very few objects that actually succeed to attract our attention and this portable leather chess set is one such small commodity. Designed by Nick Radcliffe of Raw Studio, the age-old game has been given a complete new look.

The UK-based studio creating unique product from innovative materials and processes aims to achieve ultimate efficiency through sustainability and local manufacturing. And to achieve the same, the design studio powered by contemporary artists has redesigned a classic game into a portable and eye-catching work of art.

The leather chess set featuring ring-shaped playing pieces and leather chessboard is made from stainless steel and Italian suede leather. All 32 playing pieces can be easily interlocked and rolled into a 16-inch long leather chessboard.

Made from heat-treated and oxidized stainless steel, each piece is hand-polished to create color difference, whereas leather is hand cut and sewn to create cubicle battlefield. Contrast of suede and skin side is being used to achieve balck/white squares to replicate the classic chessboard pattern.

Highly portable and space-saving, the chess set is secured with its interlocking playing pieces, which, if not in use, can be rolled up together to exhibit minimalism. Ideal for gifting purpose, the set comes in a preservation grade box created by the third generation box makers of London.

Easy to maintain and clean, the pieces can be polished using soft cloth, while the suede board can be cleaned with a special brush. Price, however, is a little on the higher side, but nothing can beat the smile it will bring on your loved one’s face when he/she opens the box.
