Fredrik Färg and Emma Marga Blanche teamed up in 2010 to give birth to a Stockholm-based design studio named Färg & Blanche. The duo created the Thread sofa for the Swedish furniture brand Johanson Design. Modular design is at the core of the Thread seating system: It can serve as a chair, sofa, and bench with its flexible shape. The furniture has a bold look and innovative design complemented by vibrant upholstery to be used in both commercial and residential settings.

Färg & Blanche used the carpet overlock machine to create interlocked edges for the Thread sofa. The Thread series was initially created to mark the Swedish Presidency of the European Union in 2023, where it became part of the Brussels-based installation, the Yellow Thread.

The latest iteration was presented during Stockholm Design Week 2024. The new version has gone through major changes and development to create flexible modular seating for various living areas, especially public spaces like hotels, offices, and commercial places. The changes are intended to make the furniture comfortable and usable, while also giving an option of armrests but the basic design doesn’t have them.

Färg & Blanche experimented with a carpet overlock machine for their exhibition’s set design and interior decor in Brussels. Nevertheless, they stitched together several layers of felt or textiles to create the desired three-dimensional shapes rather than utilizing this in the traditional way to overlock a carpet’s edge. The result is a mesmerizing, quirky set of furnishing with bold and contrasting thread outlines.

Färg & Blanche used the same yarn typically used to manufacture the actual textile to test this approach on the Hallingdal textile from Kvadrat in the case of Thread Sofa.
