Mounting a rooftop tent onto a pickup truck is a popular option thanks to its budget-friendliness, but the creators of the Camp Tonneau Tent claim to offer many benefits with its self-contained design. It is a tonneau cover that integrates all structural components of a hard-walled tent, so you do not need a separate bed rack as with standard rooftop tents. Its fold-flat design may also lead to less impact on the vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

The Camp Tonneau Tent is designed to offer the comfort of a hard-sided tent without the hassle of climbing ladders. The shelter is created in the truck bed, with a rear panel increasing the overall length a bit. Using the truck bed as the floor also gives about two extra feet of headroom compared to rooftop tents. As seen in the images, two people can comfortably sit on chairs inside, and sleep one or two people. The maker claims its smallest model provides 84 inches (7 feet) of sleeping length in a 5-foot truck bed.

Accessing the Camp Tonneau Tent is easy, as you can step directly on the truck bed; even pets and kids can do it easily. Weighing about 80-100 lbs, it will not make a big impact on the gas mileage. You can set up and tear down the tent without removing your gear from the truck bed, which is an added benefit. This eliminates the time required to unload your equipment to create a sleeping space.

It acts as a low-profile, flat tonneau cover when folded, keeping the truck bed available for everyday cargo, and transforms into a tent when unpacked. The setup is claimed to be complete in just 90 seconds.

You need to pull out the integrated fabric and frame, then push the roof upward, which automatically drops the hard sidewalls into place along the bed rails. The interior design includes a transparent skylight panel for stargazing, and there are plans for additional options like an HVAC port, awning, and load-bearing crossbars in the production model.

The Camp Tonneau Tent is designed to fit most body-on-frame pickup trucks from major brands, like Chevy, Ford, Dodge/Ram, Jeep, Toyota, and Nissan, but requires a traditional truck bed box with standard rails. It is currently in the prototype stage, and three sizes are available to pre-order through Kickstarter. You can back its campaign for a minimum of $1,899 to pre-order the smallest Mid-Size Short Bed option, which is slated to deliver in January 2027.
