On a sunny day in mid-April when architects, designers, interior decorators, lighting designers, students et al begin to gather at the FieraMilano complex in Milan’s metropolitan town of Rho, it is unseemly to talk about a wooden stool that debunks the classic ideology. With twisted legs – where no two look identical – this three-legged Rippled Stool from Wilkinson & Rivera studio in London is however recreating wooden essence with a sticker price not for everyone.

The furniture industry is in its moment of reckoning where stakeholders are branching out into new materials. In the flood of metal, recycled plastic, stone, etc., the existence of wooden furniture goes unnoticed by most in everyday life, yet woodworking retains a special place for many studios. This includes Wilkinson & Rivera, founded by Grant Wilkinson and his wife Teresa Rivera in 2021.

The duo is attracted to woodworking with a common interest in giving classic furniture a twist. Their studio’s organic contours in furniture have come of age since the Windsor Chair. Wilkinson & Rivera made Salone del Mobile debut with the Mesa de Baile Coffee Table last year and has now reimagined traditional timber stool with a limited edition outing.

The unconventional Rippled wooden stool is made from European oak, which is strong, durable, and has tighter grain producing rich natural shades. Of course, the top – with three evident screw impressions – gives the Rippled Stool a distinctive appearance; it’s the three legs of each stool, carved from a single stock of timber, which provide it the unique sculptural significance to justify the $2,640 retail price, if you may.

Substantiating its peculiarity and price, the Rippled Stool is available in a strictly limited number. Only 10 examples have been created and each has its own uniqueness, distinguishing them ever so slightly from their siblings at the hand-carved wiggly legs.
