Since 2014, Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrov has been working on a project entitled Second Hand wherein she creates sculptural ceramic clothing using tiles recovered from different places around the world. Her artworks not only represent recycling but also establish a connection between fashion, architecture, and memories of local people.
This year, she had a solo exhibition “Permit for the cocktail” in Arte Continua, established by Galleria Continua in Italy, for which she had collected ceramics from old Havana streets.
From the local architecture, she was particularly moved by Hospital Antituberculoso Joaquin G. Lebredo and thus collected ceramics similar to the walls of the building and turned them into clothing. 2019 Series ceramic cloth artwork is a sort of monument for this significant place in Cuban architectural history.
Currently, Zhanna is exhibiting a new version of the Second Hand art series at International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale, in the Central Pavilion. She has repurposed ceramic tiles from a hotel in Venice to construct the clothing items.

Inspired by the common Brazilian practice of decorating walls with colored ceramic tiles, her first installation was at Sao Paulo, Brazil. The inspiration for her unique art pieces is derived from her home country, Ukraine, that has a long history of ceramic tile production. Enjoy some interesting pictures of the collection below.
