There are numerous speakers available in the market, yet most follow a conventional design, resembling the look of a standard speaker. Even special editions, such as the recently launched Il Cremonese Ex3me – Automobili Lamborghini Edition by Sonus Faber that boasts elegant silhouettes and striking colors, stick to the familiar speaker form. Challenging this approach, designer Asaf Beiman has introduced GRID, a modular sound system that reimagines audio equipment as a statement furniture piece.

Inspired by mid-century stereo consoles, the GRID speaker system combines fragmented audio components in a single furniture piece. The designer wants people not to settle for a bookshelf speaker when they can design a speaker that is an actual bookshelf.

As vinyl makes a comeback, people are reconnecting with music in a more personal and tangible way. Unlike endless digital playlists, a vinyl collection reflects individuality and taste. The GRID speaker system follows the same philosophy with a modular design that feels unique and personal, much like curating records. A similar approach was seen in Shinkōgeisha’s Anomalo project, where different parts of a radio, like the dial, speaker, and volume slider, were designed as separate modules rather than fused into one body.

Designer Asaf Beiman reimagined the vintage stereo console as modular elements to create a sound system that easily adapts to different spaces and needs. Resembling a wall-mounted shelving unit, it is built from aluminum tiles connected by vertical poles that form a bold yet elegant structure.

Inspired by mid-century space-age wall sculptures, Beiman used geometric tile shapes not only for their look but also for their acoustic function as they serve as waveguides and shape the internal volume. Aluminum was chosen as the main material for the design as it features a clean, modern aesthetic as well as acoustic qualities.
