Horror and comedy are two separate breeds of filmmaking. The two genres have ruled over the big screen for years: be it Jennifer Spence’s production designed The Conjuring which gave us jump scares or Robb Wilson King’s production designed The Scary Movie which created a laughter riot in theatres, every single one of these movies has entertained us.

Combined, the genre of horror comedy is one heck of a ride. If you are done watching the separate horror and comedies of all time, I present to you a brand new list of the best horror comedy movies of all time that will let you forget all your worries and allow you to celebrate Halloween while snuggled up inside your blanket. The list features twenty horror comedy movies of all time that will scare and amuse you in the same breath. Some of these can be viewed on OTT platforms while you might have to figure out ways to watch the rest.

Studio 666

A Foo Fighters horror comedy is what the audience asked for. The writer-director duo of Dave Grohl and B. J. McDonnell delivers an absolute killer of a movie that will have you in splits. The movie is so bad that it’s actually good. The Guardian calls it a Gonzo gross-out but I’d recommend you to have a go at it this Halloween to form your own perception. Leading the star cast is the founder of Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl himself, who alongside Taylor Hawkins, Rami Jaffee, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, and Pat Smear, all members of Foo Fighters record their album in a haunted house. The movie is loosely based on their experiences recording in Encino, California

Day Shift

It’s time to Netflix and chill! A Jamie Foxx starring action comedy that will leave you cracked is the perfect Halloween pitcher. Day Shift is about a man named Bud Jablonski, portrayed by Jamie Foxx who is a pool cleaner by day and vampire hunter by night. Snoop Dogg and Natasha Bordizzo add even more fun to the party as side characters. Overall, it is a blend of comedy and a decent storyline that is worth a watch this Halloween.

White Noise

The first thing you should know about the film is that it is based on a 1985 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo. It is a supernatural horror-thriller film with dozes of black comedy cleverly packed inside it. Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, the film stars Adam Driver and Greta Gerwin in lead roles. The plot of the film is hush-hush because I don’t want to spoil your movie experience. All I could reveal at the moment is that The Guardian gave it five out of five stars and I believe, it is enough for you to glue to your screen during Halloween.

Bodies Bodies Bodies

A black comedy genre that features music from Disasterpeace (an American composer), but turns out to be a masterpiece. Some would call the picture a hell of a ride, while for others, it will remain to be a ninety-four-minute disaster. It’s about perception. Basically, the film is about a few friends and strangers stuck in a mansion who start playing the Bodies Bodies Bodies game. Amid this a murder takes place and the film is about the event that unfolds it.

Who Invited Them

It is something that doesn’t add anything new to the horror genre but it is a decent one-time watch. Directed by Duncan Birmingham, the movie is based on events that follow a housewarming party. As evident from the title, the movie revolves around a couple who were not invited to the party hosted by the lead cast. Rest is for you to dive and explore. No spoilers here!

All My Friends Hate Me

First premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, the movie was released on 11 March 2022 in theatres. The movie isn’t creepy but will keep you hitched by the edge of your seat. It’s a perfect Halloween starter if you want to start your day with all smiles. The plot features a man named Pete who has just returned from volunteering in a refugee camp. As he celebrates his birthday weekend, he becomes suspicious of his old folks not wanting him in the group. The fear slowly turns into paranoia and later into a complete breakdown.

Nope

Those who have already watched the movie will definitely cancel me for keeping this entry at the bottom end of the list. The movie is a new take on what could have possibly been the same old alien flick. Merging horror and sci-fi together, the incredibly well-shot movie also has a fair dose of comedy to it. Honestly speaking, this movie is not something that features spine-chilling moments but is a slow-paced thriller that would serve as a perfect Halloween appetite.

Flux Gourmet

There are movies like Shaun of the Dead that is made for the masses and then there are films like Nope which are aimed at classes. However, there is a third category of movies that caters to both audiences and Flux Gourmet is exactly that niche. Directed by Peter Strickland, the movie will stir your sane minds and leave you muddled in its plot. Talking of the story, the plot is set around an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance with a bunch of folks caught up in their own power struggle.

American Carnage

One movie close that is close to giving you Scary Movie kind of vibes is American Carnage. Despite comedy and horror as its crutches, the movie walks on its storyline that deals with the gory treatment immigrants have to face in the USA. The movie could have been much better, but nevertheless, it’s a decent one-time watch. So, if you have nothing to do this Halloween, binge these movies back to back.

The Seed

Horror doesn’t necessarily imply clowns, ghosts, and witches. Sometimes it comes packed in cute-looking pulsating blob covered in black slime, and that is what “The Seed” is all about. There is satire, dark comedy, and some wow moments as well but as the film rolls forwards, the plot is encapsulated by dark themes which may end up giving you a few jumpscares. Scary Movie

When you are watching a horror comedy like Scary Movie, it is important that you keep logic at bay; otherwise, you’d find this cult class to be a bore. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, the 2004 slasher comedy movie is actually a parody film that relies on humor to satirize the popular horror films of the 80s and 90s. Twenty years down the line, the film is considered a cult classic despite being called lewd, crude, and lowbrow by critics on its release. If you love parodies, this is the best we can recommend. I’d not like to reveal the plot here because that will surely curtail your fun.

Evil Dead 2

People don’t usually have many expectations with sequels but Evil Dead 2 turned out to be quite a surprise. Starring Bruce Campbell in lead, the film was not just riding on its horror element but also had doses of slapstick comedy in it. Right from the beginning to the conclusion, the film was cram-packed with entertainment. Speaking of storyline, it may sound redundant, but the film involves Bruce Campbell battling demons in a secluded cabin.

Shaun of the Dead

Released in 2004, Shaun of the Dead is one of the best, if not the best zombie comedy movies of all time. It’s a deadly combo of a perfect script equally supported by believable characters. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are absolutely hilarious while the director Edgar Wright adds the perfect dose of action in the film. The plot revolves around Shaun (played by Simon) waking up one day and finding the world has been taken over by zombies. So, what does he do to protect his mom, girlfriend, and friends is for you to figure out.

Zombieland

What is a perfect horror comedy? The answer is the film that has funny jokes, badass characters, and a perfect storyline! It was Ruben Fleischer who had balls of steel to ensemble a star-studded cast of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin for one such movie. The plot remains simple, a world full of blood-dripping zombies that want to bite every last bit of your fresh. How the characters survive this zombie apocalypse is for you to find.

The Cabin in the Woods

IMDb Rating- 5.7/10

This was a movie ahead of its time. Even if released in 2050, it will still go over everyone’s heads. This is a kind of film that satiates the horror element, has plenty of comedy, and secretly writes a deconstructionist essay on genre filmmaking. Boasting the most clichés of all premises, the film circulates around five friends who go for a weekend getaway and are unaware of the horror awaiting them.

Cocaine Bear

Unabashed by critics, Cocaine Bear is a kind of film that will have you in splits, only if you choose to keep logic at bay. As soon as the makers dropped the trailer of the film, it had me encapsulated and I couldn’t help but spend a few pennies to reactivate my Amazon Prime subscription. The film plot features a bear that has gulped a few packets of cocaine and has gone absolutely berserk. Needless to say, the film is based on true incidents. So, if you are pondering what to expect from this cinematic masterpiece, well there is a bear that has embarked on a drug-fuelled rampage through a Georgia forest killing everyone that comes in its way.

This Is the End

With a star-studded cast of James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen (who is apparently the director too), Jay Baruchel, and Danny McBride, expect nothing but colossal comedy. I enjoyed the movie personally, and I like the fact the characters played themselves and not a bunch of American Pie boys. So, the film is about James Franco throwing a party for his celebrity pals and soon the party is bombarded by an apocalypse of biblical proportions. Will Franco and friends be able to save the world or will they witness it disintegrate, that’s for you to decipher. The jokes are good, the acting is awesome and the direction is sublimely hilarious.

Bubba Ho-Tep

I wait for the week to get over, so I can binge-watch all the movies I’ve lined for the weekend and as soon as I turn my laptop on, I have a brain fade kind of moment, and I am not able to decide what to watch. I am pretty sure that’s the case with you too. If you’re done watching all the aforementioned movies and want to see ‘a blast from the past’ there is no better horror comedy film than Bubba Ho-Tep. It’s a story of an elderly Elvis Presley played by Bruce Campbell who awakes from comma and now has to defend his retirement home from an Egyptian mummy. Dope af, right?

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

Some of you were not even born when this masterpiece was released, while I was snuggled in my blanket and watching Scooby-Doo and his gang travel to the distant Moonscar Island to fight the zombie pirates. Jim Stentrums’ directorial not only marked the reunion of Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Velma, and Daphne but also featured a climax never seen before. In normal Scooby-Doo storylines, there is always a culprit who is unmasked at the very end, but here things are pretty gore and weirdly different.

Zapatlela

I am concluding the list with my all-time favorite film, Zapatlela. It’s not a film, it’s an emotion for me and a billion Indians. Starring Laxmikant Berde and Mahesh Kothare in the lead, the film plot revolves around a man who is haunted by a doll. The spirit of a gangster that is psychotic, and vulgar has somehow gained control over the doll, and now it’s on a rampage to kill people who have known the secret.
