The simple term “cabin in the woods” is enough to evoke images of horror movies and monsters. More often than not, rarely does it make us think about beautiful dwellings nestled in the lush jungles. While most cabins have a rugged structure, we stumbled upon an architecturally designed cabin snuggled in the jungles of the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Dubbed BIV Punakaiki, this New Zealand cabin in the woods is designed into an architectural masterpiece by Hong Kong-based architect Mark Panckhurst who grew up in the island nation.

A wonderfully reimagined creation, the classic dwelling connects the interior of the house with nature and provides a wonderful space to live in. Inspired by the old gold miner huts of the West Coast, the cabin design is unique and has a modern charm about it.

Aesthetical and functional, this vacation rental in the woods offers an ideal retreat from the hubbub of busy city life. The black metal exterior stands out in the surroundings, while its natural wood interior makes it cozy.

Dotted with black accents, the interior features floor-to-ceiling glass walls on two sides in the open-floor living area, the bedroom, and the bathroom for seamlessly blending with the outdoors. There is even a tiny loft section – accessible via a metal staircase – which can be used for entertaining guests and watching movies under a skylight.

There is a small porch-like area where the owner stacks wood logs. A door on the porch leads to the living area where an open-floor layout creates a sense of openness in this tiny dwelling. On the right side, the living room has a couch and coffee table facing the glass wall overlooking the palm jungle outside, a black cabinet is placed along the wall to house essentials.

On the opposite side stands a tiny fireplace. To the left side of the entrance lies the kitchen and dining area of the cabin in the woods. The fully-equipped kitchen contains plenty of storage space, an integrated cooktop, a sink, and other cooking essentials. Flanking the fireplace are two doors; one leads to the bedroom and another to the sizeable bathroom.

The bedroom has a full glass wall and a king-size bed. Next to the bedroom is the spacious bathroom, which features an alcove bathtub along a huge glass window, a vanity sink, a toilet, and more storage.

The BIV Punakaiki cabin is dotted with black accent lighting to create a charming ambiance. This luxurious hidden gem sleeps four and is available as a bed and breakfast through Canopy Camping.
