The Field chair, designed by Adam Goodrum for Australian furniture brand Design By Them, was officially debuted at 3daysofdesign 2026. Introduced as part of the brand’s showcase celebrating over 18 years of Australian design, it is described as an understated, contemporary reinterpretation of a classic coffeehouse chair. At first, it may look like a classic bistro chair, such as the famous Thonet No. 14, but as you come close, it reveals more details of its creative use of material.

Once you see it from near, you realize that the Field chair utilizes an unusual material for seating. It features a minimalist, powder-coated (double-layer) e-coated steel tube frame, while the seat is upholstered with dyed polyester rope. This not only adds a distinctive visual element to the design but may result in more comfortable seating than designs with metal or wood.

The Field chair has a phthalate-free polyvinyl sleeve, under the rope covering, to ensure it doesn’t stay wet for long periods, making it suitable for outdoor use. Another thoughtful detail is the use of wrapped joints, which add some visual interest to the chair’s outer structure.

The curved backrest and legs of the chair show that the design is heavily inspired by traditional bentwood furniture. Adding woven rope elements adds a textural detail to the minimalist structure.

Adam Goodrum wanted to “create a design that feels restrained and understated, while still carrying a quiet sense of playfulness. I wanted the chair to have a light, approachable personality, something that feels familiar and intuitive, yet distinctive through its use of color, material, and form.” Needless to say, the sentiment came through in the design.

As seen in the images, the Field chair is available in various vibrant finishes, including light blue, tan/orange, and deep burgundy, allowing it to seamlessly blend into outdoor settings.
