Snøhetta is arguably the Tesla of architecture & interior design. The Norwegian firm is not just renowned for their art and science of building but also for their thoughtful approach in product design and interior spacing. Recently, the firm collaborated with Italian leviathan, Lodes, which has a reputation for designing and producing lighting solutions for homes and outdoors since 1950.

The recent collaboration gives rise to a modular LED pendant collection or suspension lamps. Dubbed Volum, the collection features four blown glass spheres measuring 14, 22, 29 and 42 cm in diameter. Fusing the style of traditional glassblowing with modern luminaires, the glass lamp offers 360-degree illumination adding vitality to a space. Available in glossy white finish, the sphere looks pretty simple in design yet follows a complex, technically-driven solution to illuminate.

The reason behind this could possibly be the clever design that Snøhetta brings to the table. In fact, the entire collection is a re-interpretation of a lighting archetype from Snøhetta. The upper section of the glass is skillfully cut at 45-degrees and then closed with a translucent methacrylate lid that seals the lamp, making both diffuser and the frame appear as a single unit.

Lodes and Snøhetta note that the lid hides a metal part attached to the diffuser and the frame housing the light source. This ensures only exposed element on the outside is a small opening where the cable slides through and helps balance the globe.

Massimiliano Tosetto, Managing Director at Lodes told Homecrux,

It was an honor to do this Project with Snøhetta, and the designers immediately understood what we wanted with the project, our history and our vision. What they have created is a perfect interpretation of the past and the future, and we could not be happier with the result. With this re-interpretation of a lighting archetype, Volum represents another step in Lodes’ ongoing exploration of the relationship between lighting, space and the ways in which the individual interacts with these elements.

The lamp is then suspended via a single transparent hanging power cable. Each lamp in the collection can be suspended individually or in a cluster to cast a uniform glow in all directions. In a nutshell, the lamp not just offers a illumination but decorative touch to the space, thus blending aesthetics and functionality.
