The Italian architecture studio Stefano Boeri Architetti has designed an experimental kitchen island for the kitchen cabinet manufacturer Aran Cucine. Showcasing at Milan Design Week 2018, the Oasi freestanding kitchen island houses all essential elements of a traditional Italian kitchen, from storage, washing and food preparation to cooking, serving, consumption, and recycling.

This nature-inspired kitchenette is versatile in terms of space. Along with plenty of storage, its Corian top develops on two levels which can used as a dining/breakfast table for up to nine people.

The focal point of Oasi is a lemon tree at the center, making it an infinite source of cultural and gustatory enjoyment.

The lemon tree functions as a spatial, mnemonic and symbolic reference point where familiar and convivial relationships gather round: an increasingly complex and variable network, able to change according to multiple life stories of the participants.

There’s also a mechanical component integrated into the base of the vase to adjust the position of the plant according to sunlight.
