When launched in 2024, the Tusca HitchHiker was intended to serve as a sleeper camper that could be transported over the bed of pickup trucks to reach remote spots. After being rebranded as the Freedom Camper last year, this fully enclosed hardshell camper is now getting a larger sibling. Designed by the team behind Redneck Outdoor Products, the all-new XL model is built for 6-foot and wider trailers and flatbed trucks. You can use it as a teardrop camper on a trailer, a box camper for your pickup, or a removable truck camper for flexibility.
This box camper features exterior dimensions of 89 inches long, 72 inches wide, and 54 inches high. What makes it different from previous models is the extended width, which makes it suitable for 8-foot-long pickup truck beds. As for the interior space, it comes with a 68 x 85-inch (173 x 216 cm) floor that is sufficient enough space to accommodate a super queen-size mattress.
As noted by New Atlas, the Redneck team has increased the height of the front wall by 11 inches (28 cm), adding extra headroom at the front of the trailer. The camper pod also includes two windows, sized 15 inches high by 30 inches wide, and a door opening of 47.25 inches high by 30.75 inches wide.
Just like the previous models, the Freedom Camper XL is a lightweight, wood-free unit made from high-density foam with a tough polyurea coating to handle rugged terrain and harsh weather. The maker says it remains usable in temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.7 degrees Celsius).

The box camper comes as a blank camper shell, with no amenities installed. It just includes carpeting on the floor, a pair of slider windows on both sides, and a few vents for bringing in fresh air. The basic camper unit also includes a door and rack/accessory-mounting strips embedded in the roof.
The most impressive feature of the truck bed camper is its toughness. As shown in a video, it maintains its integrity even after getting hit by sledgehammers and being dropped from a 15-foot-high (4.6-m) forklift. Apart from the durable shell, the camper is lightweight enough, with a weight of approximately 190 lbs. It can be mounted directly on a truck bed or on a small utility trailer.
The Freedom Camper XL is designed as a minimalist basecamp that you can outfit as you like. It is listed for a price of $4,299, and you can also go for many other add-on features, including mounting hardware, a ventilation fan, and a rooftop air conditioner.
