Objects with textured surfaces are generally beautiful to look at and German designer Sebastian Herkner must have been thinking the same while designing his latest Uala lamp collection for Serax. Inspired by the pleated leaves of the Ruffled Palm, he has envisioned a sophisticated lighting piece that features the same kind of pattern in its entire body. Another relation it makes is to Japan’s popular hand fans which also embrace a similar pattern.
The Uala lamp features a delicately pleated lampshade sculpted to mimic the organic folds of tropical palm leaves. Herkner started with pleated paper models to achieve the spontaneous pattern in ceramic material. This design element adds a dynamic and sculptural quality to the lamp, making it more of a piece of art than a functional object.
When turned on, the lamp creates a beautiful play of light and shadow on its surface. This striking visual effect adds unique depth to the design.
It is a one-piece lamp with a uniform color throughout its body. The highly detailed design and soft curves of the lamp mimic leaves swaying in the breeze.

For the Uala lamp, Herkner took a more traditional approach while also adding a modern charm to create lighting that harmonizes with any space. The new Uala lamps are handmade in ceramic and available in white and shiny black colors to match different needs. The lamps were recently presented at Maison et Objet 2025.
