Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric van is slowly gaining popularity for camper conversions, but the lack of a high-roof option has limited its appeal. Netherlands-based Tonke Campers has addressed this issue with a clever lifting roof design. While similar ideas have been used before, such as Alpincamper’s interior height extension, Tonke takes it a step further by integrating a slide-out rooftop tent on the Volkswagen ID. Buzz to create an elevated sleeping area. The result is a fusion of a family car and a fully functional camper with extra sleeping space.

Tonke Volkswagen ID. Buzz is available in two versions: Trail and Explorer. Both versions feature the unique lifting and sliding roof design that opens to the side to create a large 140×210 cm bed above.

The pop-up roof also opens up standing room inside the van while serving as a handy awning. Another cool highlight of the Trail module is that it can be removed when you want extra cargo space while the Explorer version is designed with luxurious living in mind.

The Trail module features a wide 3-seater sofa and an optional rear kitchen module with a two-burner induction hob, a fridge drawer, and double-bottomed crates for storage. With a sliding system, you can prepare meals both indoors and outdoors. There is also an option to create a generous 150×200 cm bed on the lower level by folding down the rear seats.

The Trail model includes five seats, making it a good choice for families. The price starts from €57,500 (roughly $65,100) on the Tonke website. The Explorer model with four seats is listed for €75,500 (about $85,500). More details are yet to be revealed.
