The newly designed LIGHT table lamp challenges the way we think about power and energy independence. Designed by Layer Design for Muuto, it is powered by a bio-fuel derived from algae, nature’s most adaptable and renewable resource. It is a symbol of staying sustainable even in tough times. This lamp will work even when there is no electricity, but it may not work in windy conditions as the flame might get extinguished.
As seen in the images, the lamp features a minimalist design of four key components. Each unit includes a jar-like base that holds the algae fuel and a shallow bowl that rests on its top. This upper element, made from porous aluminum cast with salt crystals, is not just for aesthetic but it also adds to illumination.
It reflects and amplifies the flickering flame to create rich, textured patterns of light and shadow. A small pipe with a flat washer joins the top and bottom parts together in a simple way to create the lamp.

It functions much like a traditional oil lamp that draws fuel through a wick. When you need a warm, ambient glow, simply light the wick with a match or lighter. Once you are ready to turn it off, a gentle blow can extinguish the flame.
The LIGHT table lamp shows how natural flame can be integrated into a functional design. More than just a lamp, it invites us to appreciate nature’s creativity and value natural resources. It was part of Muuto’s 101010 exhibition during the Milan Design Week 2025.
