Innovation born out of necessity that aims to serve the masses and deliver personalized experiences holds a special place and regard. A case in point is French designer Paul de Livron’s passionate project- the Apollo Wooden Wheelchair. Paul’s vision to create an affordable wheelchair is deeply rooted in addressing physical mobility challenges globally.

Paul’s primary driving force for creating the modern world’s only wooden wheelchair stems from his personal experience when he felt the shortage of affordable wheelchairs for himself. He was then committed to creating an economical, comfortable, easy-to-maintain chair. His Apollo Wheelchair uses wood as its primary material owing to its easy availability and eco-friendly properties.

The chair’s design and make were flagged off after dedicated days and nights eventually finalizing in 2022. Built using low-tech manufacturing techniques, the wooden wheelchair gained admiration and fame when the designer presented it as a gift to His Holiness, Pope Francis.

The papal model is a simple yet exclusive make with imperative religious symbols. Its armrests are specially carved using the 12th-century burnt oak beams from Notre-Dame de Paris’s Cathedral. With the Apollo wooden wheelchair, Paul wishes to make a positive impact on people from all walks of life catering to their diverse physical requirements.

Paul envisions taking his entrepreneurial trajectory to new heights and at his own pace with an endeavor to serve numerous people. Three prototypes of the innovative wheelchair have been rendered so far and a fourth one will make news during the Olympic Games in Paris.
