Instead of carving real pumpkins, I have created a few faux pumpkins from different materials this year. I made paper pumpkins, yarn pumpkins, fabric pumpkins, clay pumpkins, balloon pumpkins, and sock pumpkins. But there was something missing. A sturdy DIY concrete pumpkin? So here is my attempt at concrete pumpkins for Halloween and fall decorations.

Concrete is a fun material and quite easy to handle once you get the hang of things. But if you are not careful while working with the material, your hands may have to bear the brunt of it, trust me, I learned it the hard way. On the trial run for these DIY concrete pumpkins, I forgot to wear gloves, and for two days my hands felt like coarse sand and the skin was peeling off. So better safe than sorry, learn from my mistake, and wear a pair of gloves when toiling with concrete. Now let’s learn how to make concrete pumpkins at home, shall we?

Materials Used:

  • White concrete
  • Stockings
  • Scissors
  • Jute twine
  • Plastic bottle

Here is what you do:

  • Put on a pair of gloves and then create a thick paste of concrete
  • Take a pair of stockings and cut it in half or in three pieces
  • Tie one end and put the stocking piece in a glass or half-cut PET bottle
  • Pour the concrete mixture into the stocking
  • Tie off the other end. Then tie four pieces of thread across the concrete stocking ball, making pumpkin-like indentations
  • Let it dry for 24 hours and cut the thread and stockings to get a cute concrete pumpkin
  • You can make a few in different shapes and sizes and decorate them. You can also leave them as is to adorn your home during the holidays
