Without a water heater, most households would find it difficult to keep up with their daily routines. Therefore, these sturdy and reliable appliances are very much the workhorses of the domestic environment. They provide hot water on a constant and freely accessible basis – for bathing, cooking, cleaning, and more.

Yet, despite their significance, it is surprisingly common for homeowners to let maintenance and care of their water heaters slide. While we may be used to letting our boilers and water heaters just ‘get on with it’ the reality is that they need to be closely monitored for signs of wear and dysfunction. That way, when the time comes for a replacement, you’ll be fully prepared to shop for and purchase a new one.

Finding the right water heater

There is a lot to think about when browsing for a new water heater. If you want to end up with the perfect one, you need to take factors like efficiency, size, durability, and safety into consideration. It is a good idea to put plans in place for its installation. The best way to do so is to carry out some research on the best plumbing services before going all out.

Making sure that the device is safe

Safety should be the topmost priority when working with any type of heater, but it is especially important for products that combine high temperatures and water. If you purchase a gas water heater, it needs to contain a sealed combustion chamber. The power vent and direct vent devices are good for helping diffuse excess heat and potentially irritating fumes. If possible, shop for a water heater with integrated safety features; carbon monoxide detectors are particularly valuable.

Understanding the main options

If you are hoping to replace an old or broken down water heater, you have two main choices. You can either opt for a standard storage tank device or you can upgrade to a more modern design, without a holding tank. There are benefits and drawbacks to both options, so think carefully about which best suits your needs. The key difference is that the modern devices only heat water as and when it is needed. This makes it the more economical choice.

Think carefully about the cost

Clearly, the cost is an important factor when it comes to buying a new water heater. However, it should not be used as a compromise for quality and safety. It is much more vital that you pick one that is reliable, safe, and guaranteed to last. Think of it as an investment in the future of your home. A high-quality water heater can easily last for a decade or more.

Working with a reputable plumber

While it is not impossible to install a new water heater without expert help, it can be risky. You are strongly advised to seek the assistance of a professional plumbing service. That way, the installation will be done quickly and safely. Always work with a plumber that is fully covered and insured; in the unlikely event that damages are incurred, the company will be legally obligated to fix the problem.

If you are not sure where to start when it comes to finding a reputable plumber, ask for recommendations from friends and colleagues. The best plumbing companies tend to be the ones with a great standing within the local community.

To ensure a fair price, collect two or three different estimates. Then, you can compare them and decide whether or not you’re willing to opt for a higher price, in exchange for a better quality installation.
