Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council’s Creative Dialogue initiative promotes collaborative relationships between artists, designers, and artisans from around the world in order to develop new approaches to craft and design. As part of this project, Emirati designer Ghaya Bin Mesmar and Barcelona-based design studio Mermelada Estudio have created a collection of chairs that reinterpret Safeefah, the traditional palm frond weaving technique from UAE.

Inspired by the traditional “Areesh” houses made from palm fronds, the designers have come with a unique narrative to utilize this technique to create seating products. The elegant, conical shape of the chairs create a semi-enclosed, private, and protected space just like the Areesh houses. These chairs look absolutely perfect to bring some natural essence into your home.

Bidwa artisans have woven the upholstery for the Safeefah chairs collection under Irthi’s Bidwa Social Development Programme. The designers have also experimented with different techniques to achieve a variety of colors in the chairs collection.
