Humans have been exploiting Mother Nature from time-immemorial. Though it is now that we have to bear the brunt of climate change, the seeds of forthcoming disaster were sown aeons ago. A lot has been said and done to address the grave situation of global warming, but all in vain. Nature has its ways to reciprocate human actions, and now we are going through a serious catastrophe.

To address the grim situation of climate change and global warming in a satirical manner, Reykjavík-based designer Tobia Zambotti has introduced a chair made of discarded kid-size lifebuoy ring. Dubbed, Sea Level Rise Chair, the playful design not only takes a dig at the serious situation but also celebrates the process of upcycling.

Against the background of rising sea levels and other climate-related issues, the chair features a lifebuoy ring as its seat. The buoyancy of the ring prevents a person from drowning in water and who knows, we might need this in the future considering countries like Maldives and Kiribati could possibly be submerged in water as per reports by National Geographic and ABC.

The whole project aims at a more sustainable future and celebrates the process of upcycling. Zambotti states, “We can’t stop rising sea levels but we still have a chance to slow them down. Every action matters and it’s our utmost duty to contribute towards the betterment of the planet.”

The use of the discarded material further promotes upcycling and serves as a symbolic element referencing the sea level, in addition to promoting sustainability. The orange lifebuoy ring is posed on four metal legs that are painted orange as well. With the planet struggling to stay afloat and survive, the bright orange color emphasizes the urgency to do our bit for the situation, the designer notes.
