Wayne Dawber – an artist and school art technician – from Cheshire East has won the Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition of 2024 for a rag-tag garden hideaway made from recycled materials. His garden shed named “Wrinkly, Rusty and Retro” beat 160 other entrants to acquire the top position under the unexpected and unique category. The annual competition showcases the exceptional designs made by residents of the United Kingdom and Ireland to win the title of the Cuprinol Shed of the Year and various prizes.

Dawber has been inspired by the mural paintings and 1950s magazines which are reflected in how the structure has been decorated. He skillfully hand-painted both the interior and exterior with colorful designs depicting the retro charm.

The exterior of the shed uses recycled materials such as corrugated metal from a torn-down stable roof and windows from a demolished chapel. It is then dotted with paintings that resonate with the vintage and rustic vibes.

The internal wooden paneling is sourced from various dumpsters around the designer’s neighborhood. The walls are decorated with old-fashioned products and matchbox graphics, paintings, and weather-worn effects. The setup of the house is kept decent, with some seating and storage space.

Dawber said, “The plan for the shed has always been for it to be a little hideaway for my wife and me. We love spending time in nature and watching the world go by from our garden – this shed gave us the perfect space to do that.”

The garden shed is perfect for spending time and storing gardening tools. It took two weeks to build the structure and a further six weeks to paint the murals inside out. Wayne’s hard work in building the shed is not only praiseworthy for its design but also demonstrates his concern for the environment by developing an eco-friendly structure.
