If tiny houses were tiny, they would look somewhat like Levi Kelly’s recently completed tiny house. Cleverly built, it is considered the world’s smallest house by square footage, measuring only 19.46 square feet. This micro-habitat showcases an unexpected and incredible approach to space-saving design, and it is hard to disagree.

What comes to mind when you think about the smallest tiny house is an ultra-compact layout and uninhabitable space. However, this ingenious tiny house is a fully functioning dwelling and quite livable if needed. The house is built on a truck axle trailer and two jacks for stability. For the exterior, Kelly used cedar cladding and painted the exterior black for an outstanding look. The roof has ordinary roof shingles and two solar panels, one on either side.

He has added windows to the house and custom-made the entrance door, featuring an RV-style handle. Next to the door is an outdoor shower with hot and cold water and an accessible outdoor toilet at the back of the house. Other exterior features include a vent for the AC, heating unit, and all the electrical add-ons.

The interior is made of just one narrow room that looks quite cozy. Kelly built the walls and ceiling with cedar, whereas the window sills are of paduke. A bench seating area in the living space can accommodate three people. There is a soft mattress for sitting and some pillows to make the experience cozier. To save space, many storage drawers and hidden doors are incorporated including one under the bench which accommodates an AC and heating unit.

Kelly’s tiny house also features a functioning kitchen with a Peruvian walnut countertop, a sink, a cutting board, an electric cooktop, and a mini fridge. There is storage underneath the countertop that houses 5 gallons each of freshwater and gray water.

Now you must be wondering where is the sleeping space. It is in the ceiling above the seating. When the bed is unhooked from the ceiling, it folds down and rests on the maple pieces of wood on either side. There are hooks on both sides for additional support. There is no reliable access to the bed, but you can step on the countertop and climb right into the bed by pushing yourself upward. Interestingly, the bed is very comfortable and cozy to sleep.

The tiny house is a true home with all the basic necessities and a perfect companion for Kelly and his son to go camping. Kelly has invested about $5,000 to build this ultra-tiny house, and it is worth every penny well spent.
