I had a notion that most products that are released on Kickstarter are designed for convenience and mass appeal. But when I saw the Tankard drinking mug, the notion shattered. The nautically-inspired drinking mug designed by Oceanus Brass isn’t meant to help you drink your morning coffee. The 20-pound piece is rather manufactured for outdoorsy adventurers, heavy drinkers, and sailing enthusiasts who share a deep respect for the art of shipbuilding, and of course, are strong enough to lift the hefty mug.

Heavier than your average drinking vessel, the mug is machined from a solid 8-inch diameter bar of 304 stainless steel that provides strength and durability to the product. The result is a heavyweight drinking mug that feels substantial in your hand, almost as if it’s a tool designed not only to hold liquid but to withstand the tests of time and use. The mug is robust to the extent that the company doesn’t shy from admitting that “the Tankard is more likely to break your dishwasher than your dishwasher is to break the Tankard.”

With a product of that size and robustness, it’s pretty evident that it must have an inspiration as powerful as the product itself. The company sheds light on this stating, “The Mug draws inspiration from the capstan, a powerful mechanical device used aboard ships to hoist cargo, raise sails, and maneuver vessels.”

To those who have been living under the rock, capstans were symbols of strength and collective effort, transforming the immense forces of the sea into manageable tasks. The Oceanus Brass Tankard encapsulates the same sense of power and resilience. “Its design, with a smooth cylindrical body and a precise, dovetail-jointed brass handle, evokes the same craftsmanship that made the capstan an iconic maritime tool,” the company states.

The mug features a handle that is secured by a bow shackle, a maritime tool known for its versatility and durability. This same bow shackle has been reimagined to lock the brass handle into place, adding both aesthetic appeal and functionality to the Tankard. Whether you’re steadying your grip on a choppy sea or just enjoying a drink on solid ground, the bow shackle ensures the Tankard remains secure in your hand, further reinforcing its connection to the seafaring world.

One of the Tankard’s most striking features is its thermal mass. The solid stainless steel design functions both as a heat sink and a heat source, capable of locking in the warmth of your morning coffee or chilling a beverage. It is a versatile companion for whatever the day may bring, whether you’re braving cold winds on the deck of a ship or celebrating a hard-earned victory by the fire.

Oceanus Brass offers two versions of the Tankard: a 20-lb variant that holds 20oz and the more portable 8-lb version with a 16oz capacity. Either one is bound to turn heads, making a bold statement in any setting.

Oceanus Brass is offering steep discounts to its early customers, with 60 percent off on acknowledging the rarity of a tool of this magnitude at such an accessible price. Those interested can reserve the 20 lbs mug for $350 on Kickstarter.
