Berlin-based Can Touch This by Playtronica is a creative technology studio that makes tactile sound installations for museums and brands. The studio has created works like Singing Stones, Hear and Smell, Interactive Dress, Sonic Bench, and a lot more in the past. This time, it collaborated with designer Anders Hellsten Nissen to create Sonic Bench 2.0 dubbed Indikator. It is a seating object that transforms human touch into sound.

The basic design of the bench draws inspiration from Berlin’s bus stop architecture. It is also inspired by CERN’s Globe of Science. Together with designer Sasha Pas from Can Touch This, Anders designed the marvelous seating object that can be played around by two people to create various sonic impressions.

The minimal design makes the flow of bodies easy and two people can get into a moment where they engage in various motions and combine gestures to create a pleasing sound.

An exciting feature of Indikator is its modular structure, allowing you to set it up in different locations, without much effort. The sonic patterns and soundscapes do not change when the location is changed and they are solely based on how users participate with the bench.

The purpose is to bring together two humans and make them playful when they observe or notice what the Indikator bench can do with them. This also encourages public space interactions where two absolute strangers can get fascinated to try out the mysteries that Indikator beholds.

This bench has been created after years of research and experimentation on interactive sound benches. Very snugly, the Indikator merges these qualities in an urban design. Indikator bench shows us a way forward where people come together and enjoy the sensory effects. It brings fresh air to sonic bench designs with its colorful vibes.
