In 2023, London-based design consultancy Beta Design Office collaborated with award-winning architecture and interior design practice Conran and Partners to design and build a Nomadic German Shepherd’s hut for its submission to Goodwood’s Barkitecture competition. A year later, the two partnered again and presented Moon Carrier, a pet travel system inspired by futuristic electric motorcycles and space pods. Returning to the competition for the third consecutive year, the collaboration between Beta Design Office and Sebastian Conran has resulted in a standout entry, dubbed BarkHouse.

Looking at the pictures, the BarkHouse appears to be a stunning dog house crafted from dark cork that embodies the competition’s theme, ‘From nature, for nature.’ The dark tones of the cork not only give the structure a warm, earthy aesthetic but also create a cozy, secure environment for dogs, allowing the design to blend seamlessly back into nature. The material’s natural texture contrasts playfully with a modern pop of color – vibrant orange food and water bowls – adding a fresh, contemporary touch to the overall look.

“Packed with thoughtful features, the design includes a paddling pool, a water trough, and a tennis ball chute. The soft, curved shape creates an inviting space while seamlessly blending contemporary aesthetics with functional design,” inform the makers. What sets the BarkHouse apart is its thoughtful integration of interactive and practical features.

A standout element is the ball chute, a whimsical addition that allows owners to drop balls into the chimney, which then shoot out the front of the house. This feature fosters a sense of play and engagement, strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners. Additionally, the design includes a dedicated side area for food and water bowls, ensuring that dogs can eat, drink, rest, and play without leaving the comfort of their cork sanctuary.

Overall, the BarkHouse is more than just a dog kennel, it’s a cozy space designed with canine comfort and joy in mind. Set to be exhibited on 17 and 18 May, the BarkHouse, with all its design nuances, is a hot favorite to win Barkitecture 2025.
