This year at 3daysofdesign, Swedish design company Fogia unveiled its new Kern table collection crafted from marble waste material with appearance of terrazzo. The slightly uneven and raw appearance of the material not only attracts your eyes but also invites you to touch it. Designed by Monica Förster known for her poetic design philosophy, the Kern tables are designed to serve as a furniture unit and as a sculptural piece.

The Kern collection features tables in different heights, and lengths, making them versatile for use in home or other settings. All the furniture pieces are made from Outt, a marble-based material created to utilize waste from quarries in Northern Italy. This innovative process reuses not just marble chips (often used in terrazzo), but also marble dust as a binder. The result is an upcycled material with a high marble content – around 85-percent – and a character all its own.

“This is a completely new material made from marble waste. It has a fascinating appearance. We began with the material, which led us to a brutalist form that we softened by breaking off the corners, done by hand, so each table is unique,” explains Monica Förster. She did not force a shape onto the material but let the material guide the design. The tables feel like they were discovered within the material, rather than something intentional.

Kern tables stand out with their bold look and simple construction; each unit is made of just four stone slabs. Its design is precise and expressive, giving it meaning beyond just being a table. Monica Förster wanted the table to speak for itself, letting its form and materials create an emotional connection. She says making things by hand brings out poetry and feeling in the design.

The idea for the broken corners came by accident when a damaged sample arrived, turning a mistake into one of the table’s key features. For Förster, luck is not just about finding something new, but also about seeing its value.

Kern feels both old and new at the same time. Its heavy stone gives it a sense of strength, but its shape is light and elegant. The table is massive yet graceful, simple yet refined, reminding us of ancient monuments as well as modern art.

The Kern table collection is primarily designed for indoor use but is also suitable for outdoor environments. It is available in three colors: White, Grey and Terracotta Brown. The coffee table measures 33 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 37 cm deep; the side table in two different heights measures 40/45 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 25 cm deep.
