Architecture that blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings is often termed as organic architecture. Internationally acclaimed architect Sou Fujimoto has also designed one great example for NOT A HOTEL – a real estate and hospitality concept that offers a unique approach to home ownership and travel. Named EARTH, this circular building features a bowl-shaped roof that makes it disappear into the seaside site. Its creative, hilly design lets guests enjoy views of Ishigaki’s green nature and blue ocean right from their rooms. Another cool element is its hand-finished white façade, which reflects sunlight to create a vivid contrast against the sea and sky.
Built on a large seaside lot of about 10,000 square meters, the villa’s total floor area, including indoor spaces, terraces, pool, and water features, covers around 1,500 square meters. The property offers a large living and dining area, an infinity pool looking out to the ocean, and four bedrooms that accommodate up to ten guests.
All the living spaces, including the unique bowl-shaped courtyard, are designed for uninterrupted views of the sky and sea. Large openings in the living/dining room maximize this connection to the horizon. The infinity pool appears to merge seamlessly with the ocean and can be directly accessed from the main living area.
Likewise, the first floor features a sauna where streams of natural light from skylights above shine onto the water basin next to the pool, creating a feeling of being underwater. Near the sauna are two showers, a cold bath, and access to an outdoor bathing area. The villa’s gym is fully equipped with a treadmill, Smith machine, punching bag, and dumbbells.

The waterside bedrooms are fitted with bezel-less windows to flood interiors with natural light and maximize ocean views. Even the glass-walled bathroom offers a low bathtub and shower that seem to dissolve into the water basin and sea beyond. Guests can also have a private chef prepare dinner using locally sourced Ishigaki beef, island fish, and fresh produce, all served at the main dining table.
Announced in August 2022, NOT A HOTEL EARTH has now started operating. Its fractional shares have been sold out during construction. As with all its other properties, owners can use their allotted nights to stay at EARTH or trade for stays at different locations within the network. This way, the owners get both luxury and flexibility in travel and home ownership.
