As an avid backpacker, I’m always on the hunt for gear that makes my trips lighter, easier, and more enjoyable. Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s Bivy Bug is something I like in this regard. EATi Mag camping multitool is also a part of my backpacking arsenal. But when it comes to a camping stove that could fit in a backpack, options aren’t many. So when I came across the Backpacker Camping Stove from Coastal Range Equipment on Kickstarter, I was curious to see the potential.

Designed by Coastal Range Equipment, this high-performance, ultralight stove weighs 0.5lbs, a little lighter than FireTower Ti. This is quite impressive considering the fact that the Backpacker Camping Stove is an integrated system, meaning the stove and pot are designed to work together seamlessly, nesting neatly to save space.

From a material composition perspective, the burner base is made of aluminum, brass, and stainless steel, with a nylon housing to hold it all together. “The cup is hard-anodized aluminum, wrapped in a neoprene foam insulating sleeve. The lid and bottom cover are a blend of food-safe, BPA-free plastics,” the maker states. I’ve lugged around heavier canister stoves that take up way too much space in my pack, so the idea of something this compact and featherlight is always appealing.

Another highlight of the stove is one-click ignition. Sure, all camping stoves boast the same feature; nonetheless, I don’t want myself fumbling with matches or a lighter in the wind, so I think it’s worth a mention. The stove also boasts a powerful burn, with a 2.5-minute boil time for half a liter of water, which rivals some of the best stoves on the market, like the Ti-Line MFSS.

Personally speaking, I’ve had too many close calls with tippy stoves that make me nervous about knocking over my dinner. Coastal Range Equipment somewhat denies this fear and has designed the stove to be stable, which is a must when you’re cooking on uneven ground at a campsite. Moreover, it’s compatible with standard isobutane canisters, so I don’t have to hunt down obscure fuel types when I’m prepping for a trip.

The cooking pot has a 1.2-liter capacity, so you have plenty of room to cook for 2-3 people, or boil enough water for a proper cup of coffee and a full bowl of oatmeal in one go. I expected the campaign page to delve into some details about wind resistance, which is a big deal when you’re cooking at higher altitudes or in gusty conditions. This is a minor curiosity compared to the stove’s potential.

If you’re also on the lookout for gear that makes your adventures smoother, check out the Kickstarter page for Coastal Range Equipment, where the stove is available for pre-order for $99 (as part of the company’s launch day special deal price).
