This Innovative All-In-One Picnic Basket has Plenty of Surprises Under the Hood

I’ve always loved the idea of eating outdoors. Nothing brings more gratification to body and mind than munching on sandwiches by the lake, chips on a trail, or a pint of beer under the stars. But the reality involves hassling with a mishmash of gear: a cooler that leaks, a tote bag that spills, and a constant prayer that nothing gets crushed or soggy. Owing to these problems, I have long been seeking outdoor gear that makes my trips less messy and more enjoyable, with food that doesn’t make me miss home. Seeking a solution to the problem, I turned to newly unveiled projects on Kickstarter, and to my relief, Nomad Box, an all-in-one picnic basket-cum-backpack-cum-cooler might just save my future trips.

Launched by Pine & Co., the Nomad Box is currently enjoying a crowdfunding phase and has turned quite some heads. This is possible courtesy of the claims the project creator is making. The company calls it “the world’s most innovative picnic basket,” and while that’s a big claim, the design backs it up. It’s a hard-shell cooler that moonlights as a backpack and a shoulder bag. Built with sustainable materials like bamboo, cork leather, sugarcane, and coconut husk, it has an eco-conscious edge that feels right for 2025.

Beyond bold claims and eco-friendly design, the Nomad Box stands out for its versatility. You can wear it as a backpack for hands-free trekking, sling it over your shoulder for a casual stroll, or grab it by the handle for a quick dash to the park. At roughly 6lbs. empty, it’s not ultralight, but it’s manageable for carrying enough food and drinks for four to six people.

For those who think it’s just another piece of outdoor kit, well, that’s not the case. Nomad Box is rather a bold attempt to rethink how we pack, carry, and enjoy food in the wild. I have had a good look at the videos and graphics, and I am pretty convinced that this might be the perfect camping solution we have all been looking for.

Another intriguing aspect of the Nomad Box is its lid. Unlike traditional coolers, the Nomad Box lid isn’t just a cover but a multi-tool in disguise. Flip it over, and you have a food-safe cutting board for slicing fruit or cheese. Pop up its fold-out legs, and it transforms into a sturdy mini table.

Inside, the Nomad Box is all about organization. Thanks to its modular pouches, the Nomad Box fits an impressive amount while keeping everything organized and travel-ready. The pouches are designed to keep everything from drinks, snacks, and utensils in their place. The insulated pouches also keep your beverages cold for hours, which is a must for long summer days.

The problem with modern-day coolers is durability. While these items promise to boast impressive features, they lack long-term value. The Nomad Box, however, is built to shrug off the elements, sand, rain, or rough terrain. I’ve come across soft-sided coolers that fail campers in emergencies, letting in water or tearing on a sharp rock, but this one feels like it can take a beating.

I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet, but Nomad Box has me rethinking my outdoor dining plans. It’s a gear that could turn a spontaneous picnic into a hassle-free highlight, whether I’m at a campsite, a beach, or just my local park. If you’re the type who loves a good meal in the great outdoors, the Nomad Box might just be your next must-have. The interested can back the project at the company’s Kickstarter page, where it is available for preorder at $469.
