Roofroomer L-Shaped Camping Pod Turns Hatchbacks and Wagons Into Hard-Walled Micro Campers

For years, pickup trucks and large SUVs have dominated the overlanding scene, leaving compact car owners to make do with tents or minimal rooftop setups. But what about drivers of compact hatchbacks and family wagons who want a similar experience without upgrading to a larger vehicle? That’s the gap Roofroomer is filling with the Native, a lightweight, hard-walled camper system that transforms small cars into capable micro-RVs.

The Roofroomer Native camper system is constructed from solid composite panels. These panels form a sturdy, insulated pod that converts an everyday car into a compact, weatherproof camper within minutes. As per the makers, “Its modular setup is purpose-built for hatchbacks, wagons, and small SUVs segments.” Basically vehicles that rarely see such dedicated camping solutions.

First reported by Auto Evolution, the camper pod is available in two variants: the Native 185 and Native 200, the latter offering a full standing height for taller users. Both models share the same installation concept. The camper pod is mounted via roof crossbars and a ball hitch to distribute weight evenly and keep the vehicle’s center of gravity stable. This setup implies that the camper can be attached or removed quickly, leaving the car fully usable for everyday driving.

Inside is where things get less interesting and more cramped. Irrespective of the space available, the Roofroomer Native is compact but carefully planned. The interior includes space for a sink with a drain hose, a shower mat, and a floor drain. Not to mention, an optional privacy curtain for the small wash area. But that is the case with the smaller model. The larger model, tailor-made for SUVs and vans, features extra room for built-in lighting and storage compartments for camping essentials. Other features include shore power compatibility and options for solar input add to its off-grid capability.

As reported by New Atlas, the Native 200 alcove offers a generous 79 x 63 inches super-queen sleeping area, while the Native 185 accommodates 75 x 55 inches. It is to be noted that both models have mattresses included as part of the standard package. The rest of the space is occupied by a toilet, a little galley table where you can place cooktop and a micro fridge underneath.

Starting at approximately $10,000, the Native 185 is positioned as an entry-level camper for compact car owners seeking greater comfort without the size or cost of a van conversion. The larger 200 model adds more interior volume and versatility, catering to those who want extended usability or longer trips.

But here is the tale of the tape. If you are someone who prefers comfort over camping, Roofroomer Native shouldn’t even be on your checklist. For someone with an adventurous spirit and desire to carry light, flexible camping solutions, the Roofroomer official website is taking preorders for the camping rig that’s compact, insulated, and ready for adventure, no matter how small the car.
