For many of us, decorating the Christmas tree is more than a chore. It is a ritual filled with nostalgia, stories, and little moments of joy. Christmas ornaments aren’t just glittering balls and twinkling lights; they’re tiny time capsules that carry memories of childhood, family traditions, and thoughtful gifts from loved ones. Hanging each piece, whether a hand-painted heirloom or a shiny new bauble, marks a moment of connection in the season’s hustle.

This year, one ornament stands out not just for its festive looks but for the ingenuity behind its design: a 3D-printed Christmas ornament with a hidden compartment tucked inside. At first glance, it resembles a classic holiday decoration, but on closer inspection, it reveals a secret space perfect for stashing a tiny gift, a handwritten note, or a special surprise.

Designed by Angus of Maker’s Muse, this two-part ornament marries creativity with clever engineering. Unlike many 3D prints that require supports to hold overhanging shapes, this design carefully navigates those challenges so it prints without supports, a smart move that keeps the finished surface smooth and clean. That’s not a trivial detail when you’re dealing with curves and spherical shapes, as typical overhangs can cause drooping or imperfections in filament printing.

What makes this ornament truly unique is its thoughtful approach to manufacturing, specifically tailored for 3D printers. Angus adapted the geometry so that tricky features, like the rounded surfaces and the hanging hole bracket, print reliably.

He even tackled difficult bridge areas by altering the design in ways that aren’t obvious in the final product. The result is a decorative piece that looks great and performs even better.

The hidden compartment transforms this ornament into a mini gift box, blending functionality with festive charm. Whether you’re hiding a tiny trinket for a scavenger hunt or tucking a heartfelt message inside, this design brings an element of surprise to your holiday décor. For makers and DIY enthusiasts, being able to print your own adds an extra layer of satisfaction and personalization.
