Sustainability has become a huge part of all consumer industries, whether furniture or fashion. But what if the focus was on longevity rather than recyclability of products? That is the exact idea with which New York designer Joe Doucet has created the Columns furniture collection for Bulgarian brand Oublier. The collection embraces enduring natural components rather than relying on disposable trends, offering a furniture collection that will never need to be replaced.

Emphasizing permanence as the new innovation, each piece is handcrafted in small numbers. Crafted from solid oak, natural leather, and horse hair, the furniture pieces are designed for extreme longevity while combating sustainability issues. The idea behind this furniture is simple: if you take care of it, it will last well beyond your years.

The collection features a cylindrical table and a bench named Column I and Column II, respectively. Both the pieces are built to last a thousand of years at the intersection of design, innovation, and sustainability.

The Column I is a cylindrical table for everyday use that is both functional and aesthetic apart from enduring life. It combines a solid oak base with a glass top. A shallow bowl like space is carved into the surface for storing everyday essentials.

The Column II bench has two bold and sturdy column legs that hold a natural leather upholstered seat. Doucet uses horsehair padding for the seat as it doesn’t compress or breakdown like the manmade foams.

The collaboration aims to redefine sustainable design by moving away from short-lived furniture. The furniture pieces showcase the ability to age beautifully over centuries. Each piece honors traditional methods while expressing a modern form keeping ecological responsibility in mind. Showcasing a balance of durability and esthetics with round legs and clean lines, the Columns collection offers a future in which most of the objects need no replacement.
