The hustle culture may be good for monetary reasons, but it has drained the social life out of people. Living alone has become so common that going to parents’ home feels like a vacation. The loneliness epidemic, as the new generation likes to call it, has become very much real. Under such circumstances, design plays a crucial role in evoking nostalgia and the sense of belonging. A case in point is the Buddy lamp that helps people feel warm and a little less lonely with its wind-up toy design that evokes childhood nostalgia.

The Buddy lamp keeps things simple and real. No AI functionalities to deal with, no apps to operate; just some tactile connection for a better experience. It is a portable mood lighting designed by Chevy Chanpaiboonrat for Buddy Design.

The visual features remind us of our childhood. Just like the toys that would move or make sound at the turn of a wind-up key, the lamp also cycles through lighting modes with the wind-up key, while pressing it adjusts the brightness levels. Hitting us with that childhood nostalgia, the Buddy lamp focuses on building a relationship with the user without compromising on functionality or weaving complicated technological webs.

The lamp has three variations: The Arvin looks like a little kid excited to welcome you home after a whole day of work. The other two – Puppy and Teddy – resemble little, animal-like forms that give a sense of calm and comfort, along with the key acting as the tail.

The Buddy lamp offers eight science-informed gradient light modes. All the colors are selected to support calm, focus, or better sleep. Choose the right shade and decide your mood every night.

Looking like puppies and teddies who grew up to become design-savvy elements in your home, the lamps merge cozy charm with a scientific touch. The lamps run for around 10 hours once fully charged and can also work while charging with the included USB-C cable.

Without overstimulating your mind, the lamp restores mindfulness and presence in daily life. Designed for modern living, Buddy lamp transforms luminaires into friendly companions that are visually assuring and invite users to slow down and enjoy the warmth.
