When it comes to camping tents built for the harshest conditions, many of us would instantly point toward The North Face. The brand is now transitioning its design philosophy from durability to accessibility, as seen through the recently launched Universal collection. This new camping and outdoor equipment line, co-created with adaptive athletes and the adaptive sports community, is designed to offer easy access for everyone. The collection comprises five items, including a wheelchair-accessible camping tent, sleeping bag, backpack, mules, and a hat, all catering specifically to specially-abled campers.
First, let’s talk about the wheelchair-accessible Universal Wawona 3 camping tent. It features a large front doorway with a low threshold that makes access easier, including for those with mobility devices. The front vestibule can fit up to two mobility devices. The main area has enough space for three people or two people using cots. There is also a dedicated attachment for a guide dog or any other furry companion.
The camping tent has a heavy-duty mat at the entry and a roll-back rainfly made of sun-blocking material. Each unit comes with three identical poles that can be interchanged during setup. It features oversized, reflective pole sleeves and entry detailing to assist people with visual impairments or for easier setup at night. Furthermore, the reflective detailing makes entering and exiting the tent easier.
Made from durable 75D polyester with a 1500 mm PU coating, this camping tent features a non-PFC DWR water-repellent finish to keep you dry in wet conditions. The tent weighs 11 lbs (5.4 kg) and offers one square meter of floor area. It is priced at $435.
The collection also includes the Universal One Bag sleeping bag that distinguishes itself through a zipperless design for unrestricted access. It uses magnetic FIDLOCK closures, making it easier to get in and out of the bag using just one hand. The user even gets audible/tactile feedback when these points snap into place.
What makes it stand out are two folding wings that allow three levels of warmth that you can customize depending on conditions. You can choose from three warmth options: use the lighter wing alone for a bit of warmth, the heavier wing alone for more warmth, or pair them both together for the highest level of warmth. The sleeping bag is rated for 20 degrees Fahrenheit / -7 degrees Celsius temperature.
This sleeping bag weighs 4 lbs (1,900 grams) in the short size and 5 lbs (2,280 grams) in the long size, with a packed size of 10 x 19 x 17.5 inches for easy transport. It has an internal length of 72 inches in the short version, while the long version measures 84 inches, comfortably fitting users up to 5.6 feet and 6.6 feet, respectively. It is listed for a starting price of $270.

Next is the Universal Daypack, designed to be easily accessed by those with limited mobility or visual impairments. It uses a FIDLOCK magnetic top closure that can be opened or closed with a single finger. An oversized handle makes it easy to carry, while magnetic closures allow for quick access.
The design includes visible or noticeable trims placed in specific spots that you can feel with your hands, so you can easily find and adjust straps or openings without looking. Another important accessibility feature is that the backpack can be attached to most wheelchairs via extended webbing straps on top of the back panel. It is currently available for $140.
The North Face Universal collection is completed with waterproof traction mules and a convertible brimmer hat.
