US-based ICECO is running a Kickstarter campaign for a new type of portable 12V freezer. It is a solution to the endless times you’ve spent headfirst in the boot of your car searching awkwardly for drinks in the fridge back there. Designed for cars, camps, and overlanding expeditions, the ICECO VL45 Plus is a portable freezer with 3-way access: ‘Open from the left, open from the right, or pull out the slide-out basket’ from the side. It’s currently available at a 25% super early-bird discount for $599, with deliveries expected to start as early as mid-July.
Traditional 12V freezers, designed for use on the go, have never really considered how they are eventually used. In tight vehicle spaces, or cramped boots, where the fridge is stacked between a lot of gear, reaching inside for food and drinks is not the easiest thing to do. With its versatile access system, VL45 Plus changes that.
As the world’s first portable fridge with a three-way access design, it gives you more options to reach in for the things, while its magnetic-ready power compatibility ensures you can use it outside of the vehicle with a clip-on battery. And this is all packed inside a rugged all-metal body, comprising reinforced corners, ensuring it lasts through everything you throw at it.

This is not the first time ICECO has introduced a new approach to car freezers. It amazed us with the launch of the GO20 Freezer, which can freeze up to -0.4°F (-18°C), a few years ago. Now, with the VL45 Plus, it is changing the scene again, but not only with how you access it. Interestingly, the freezer delivers consistent cooling without melted ice. Its vacuum-insulated panels measuring 2.8 inches thick maintain temperature consistency and consume less power, while avoiding ice or water buildup inside.
Smart access, rugged construction, and more flexible storage make the VL45 Plus a cooling system for camping and overlanding. It sits on a metal mounting inside the car boot to stay secure even during off-road travel, while integrated tie-down points keep it from sliding off on steep inclines and uneven roads.
Since it’s designed with camping and RVs, with sleeping setups, in mind, this interesting cooling setup operates with low noise. The company doesn’t detail the exact decibel levels it operates at, but affirms that you could have the freezer working in the background while comfortably sleeping alongside.
ICECO provides three convenient ways to control the VL45 Plus. You can adjust the settings directly from the onboard control panel, placed near the lid opening area for easier visibility and access, via a dedicated mobile app, or you can even use Apple CarPlay while driving to tinker with the cooling settings.
The VL45 Plus is already in production as we write. According to ICECO, the first 350 Kickstarter backers are expected to begin receiving their units later this month. The Kickstarter campaign is currently live, with up to $120 off on the launch price for early backers.
