IKEA has launched its VARPTROSS lighting collection to kick off summer home décor in the most refreshing way possible. The new IKEA lighting collection brings Vietnamese bamboo handcraft to life with industrial precision.
With this collection, the Swedish giant explores how traditional handmade techniques fit into contemporary homes without interfering with the environment. The collection is a collaboration between two designers, merging a rational approach with an intuitive outlook.
The product developer of the collection, Chiara Ripalti, brought together Andreas Fredriksson and Akanksha Deo, two IKEA designers with completely different thoughts and expertise. Both were asked to create a lighting collection, including floor, pendant, wall and table lamps, to add a natural touch to the space. That is where bamboo became the base of the designs.
Fredriksson approached the idea with Scandinavian functionality and sustainability, while Deo, coming from the textile world, had a softer approach. Consequently, this collaboration resulted in a collection of luminaires that merges structure and precision with intuitiveness. Instead of presenting bamboo as the hero, the lamps promote sustainability while giving the wood a soft look.
Bamboo and rattan products are common in Asian markets, and so is the lantern shape and pattern. IKEA wanted something more modern and rational. The lamps feature a double-layer bamboo slat construction, giving them a fresh look while blocking the light source and reducing the glare. These slats are arranged in an alternating pattern with a handmade crisscross weaving.

The bamboo slats are carefully cut, bent, and assembled by hand into softly rounded shapes that capture the warmth of light without invading the space. With a variety of pieces, the collection can work as an aesthetic focal point in different areas of the home, such as the bedroom, living room, or hallway.
The IKEA VARPTROSS lighting collection speaks of the human touch without losing its essence and functionality. With these wooden lamps, IKEA reinterprets natural fibers through contemporary shape.
