At CES 2026, Aqara unveiled the Smart Lock U400, a next-generation deadbolt designed to make everyday home access more seamless and secure. Positioned as one of the first widely available UWB-enabled smart locks, the U400 reflects the industry’s shift toward frictionless entry while maintaining compatibility across major smart home ecosystems. Built with Matter-over-Thread support and Aliro readiness, the lock is engineered to work reliably regardless of the user’s preferred platform or device. This marks a significant step toward a more unified smart home experience.
Hands-Free Entry Powered by UWB and Apple Home Key
The key feature of the smart lock is its use of Ultra-Wideband technology, which enables true hands-free unlocking. Unlike Bluetooth-based proximity detection, UWB relies on time-of-flight and angle-of-arrival measurements to determine both distance and direction with centimeter-level accuracy. This allows the lock to unlock only when an authorized user approaches from outside, preventing accidental openings when someone is inside the home or merely passing by. The added spatial awareness also reduces the risk of relay attacks, as UWB’s encrypted signal structure and precise ranging are far less susceptible to signal amplification exploits.
For Apple users, the U400 integrates deeply with Apple Home Key in the Wallet app. With compatible iPhones or Apple Watches, users can unlock the door simply by approaching it, tapping their device, or using hands-free “Unlock on Approach” when Express Mode is enabled. Home keys can be shared easily with other household members, and guest access can be managed through Apple Home with temporary or scheduled permissions. These features are supported through a Thread-enabled home hub, ensuring low-latency and reliable communication.
Smart Home Compatibility and Durable Design
Beyond hands-free access, the Smart Lock U400 supports a wide range of unlocking methods to suit different users and scenarios. These include fingerprint recognition, customizable passcodes with phantom password protection, one-time and scheduled codes, NFC cards, mobile app control, voice unlocking through Siri or Alexa, and a traditional mechanical key for emergencies. In total, the lock supports up to ten unlocking methods, making it suitable for households with varied preferences and access needs.
The U400 is built on the Thread protocol. It is Matter-certified, allowing it to integrate seamlessly with platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant. Thanks to Matter’s multi-admin capability, the lock can be managed by multiple ecosystems at once without requiring a dedicated Aqara hub, provided a compatible Thread Border Router and Matter controller are available.
Designed for everyday durability, the lock features an IP65-rated outdoor panel that resists dust, splashes, and rain. An internal gyroscope enables automatic locking once the door is closed, helping prevent accidental leave-outs. Power comes from a 7.3V rechargeable Li-ion battery rated for up to six months of typical use, with USB-C emergency charging available from a power bank or even a smartphone if the battery runs low. With the Smart Lock U400, Aqara is demonstrating how a refined balance of advanced security, cross-platform compatibility, and thoughtful convenience can elevate your home security.
