One aspect that separates an American trailer from its South African counterparts is the off-road and off-grid superiority. Contrary to American-made campers, which are generally large and designed for paved roads and campgrounds, South African-manufactured trailers are engineered to take the beating. Case in point, the recently released BERG CX4 off-road camper trailer by South Africa-based Berg Offroad.

Measuring 17.5 feet long, 6.6 feet wide, and 7.5 feet tall, the CX4 off-road trailer is tailor-made to tackle rough terrains. Similar to other models in its catalogue, the trailer is built on a heavy-duty galvanised ladder-frame chassis and features a 2.5-ton braked axle and robust leaf springs, ensuring the utmost reliability and durability for all your off-road adventures.

Before we discuss the key merits of the CX4 off-road trailer, it’s important to highlight some important features its predecessors offered. South African trailer manufacturer Berg Offroad generated serious buzz a few years back when it debuted its CX6 squaredrop trailer that folds out in seemingly every direction to create an enormous bush campsite for half a dozen people. The company then shrunk that concept down into the two-to-three-person CX3, using the same external shell.

Now, with the launch of the CX4, Berg has landed on what many would argue is the most practical configuration yet. The company has designed a trailer purpose-built for a family of three, with room to stretch to four. All three models share the same outer dimensions when being towed.

What separates the newest model from the old is how the interior is organized. The CX4 brings back the rear slide-out bedroom from the CX6, but swaps the oversized king bed for a queen-size one instead. The trailer features a dinette positioned just ahead of that bedroom. The dinette can be converted into a shorter single bed, suitable for a child. Berg Offroad also offers an optional side expansion module to accommodate an extra bed for a four-person sleeping arrangement. This, however, is an add-on option for now.

The kitchen runs on a dual-slide system, with the main section carrying a Cadac stove-and-griddle combo, a Smeg sink, drying rack, and extensive storage for cookware and utensils. A nose-box slide-out accommodates a fridge or freezer up to 90 litres, with the option to swap out a drawer stack for additional cold storage. A sweeping 270-degree awning shelters the outdoor cooking zone.

A toilet is a rarity in camper trailers, which is why most manufacturers recommend getting a portable toilet of your own. This is not the case with CX6, which features a full-width bathroom at the front end. The bathroom features a toilet, sink, shower, and floor drain. Other features include a 150-litre tank with gas and electric water heating.

The standard electrical package includes a 100Ah lithium battery, a 1,600-watt Victron inverter, and a shore power connection, with solar panels and extra battery capacity available as add-ons. Priced at ZAR 599,950 (US $37,000), the CX4 is only available in South Africa right now, but is a testament for other world campers to follow the trend.
