Just days back I spent an entire evening discussing with my girlfriend whether we should go camping or head for a glamping site this Christmas Eve. While she had the better of me, convincingly setting up a camping adventure for us; I wish I had come across this two-story mobile tent designed by Danish architectural firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and famous cabin makers Nokken that would have strengthened my case to go glamping instead.

Danish companies Nokken and BIG have revealed the ‘Softshell,’ which is being hailed as a visionary accommodation promising to redefine sustainable, experience-driven spaces. What sets the tent apart is its ability to offer a versatile, visually captivating alternative to traditional hotel rooms or cabins.

As the renders show, the sleek tent has an immersive space designed to enhance the guest experience while minimizing the ecological footprint. BIG and Nokken equipped the tent with a double bed and a loft that features a netted area similar to the one we have seen in many Baluchon tiny houses.

The loft can be accessed via a ladder adjacent to the bedside table and lighting fixture. The interior also includes a wood stove, so glamping during winter shouldn’t be much of a problem. Then there are other furnishings like tables and chairs. There is no view of a toilet or bathroom, so I assume it doesn’t fit the package and the hospitality owner would have to arrange one on their own.

The Softshell is currently in the prototype stage and is being tested in Canada. “Drawing from BIG’s signature innovative approach to architecture, the tent’s design seamlessly integrates aesthetic elegance with practical functionality. Each detail, from the choice of materials to the structure’s adaptability to various environments, has been carefully considered to provide a sustainable and luxurious retreat,” the makers inform.

The Softshell is available for preorder through Nokken’s website for €250 (approximately $260). “This exclusive pre-order opportunity offers a chance to be at the forefront of a new wave of eco-conscious hospitality, combining cutting-edge design with environmental responsibility,” mentions the company.
