Birdwatching is a soothing experience that evokes calm and joy, helping foster a deeper connection with nature. The Birddy swing embodies this delicate concept in its transformable design that turns into a birdbath when flipped upside down. Designed by Yejin Hong and Seyeon Park, the conceptual swing inspires children to nurture and protect nature. The recent award-winning furniture design gently teaches kids to respect all forms of life and take small, meaningful steps toward a sustainable future.

Inspired by the Korean tradition of Kkachibap, where people leave unharvested persimmons for the hungry birds, the Birddy swing shows kids how their small act of play can turn into a gesture of kindness toward wildlife. This mindful concept earned the designers an Excellence Prize at the Kengo Kuma & Higashikawa KAGU Design Competition, 2024.

Primarily made from natural wood, the multifunctional swing seamlessly blends with the serene environment. The 280 millimeters concave seat helps prevent slipping and improves safety during play. The adjustable swing handle looks like a red ball, allowing kids of any height to enjoy the play. Just press the button and adjust the swing’s height.

To turn the swing into a birdbath, remove the fixed grooved ball below the seat and flip it over. Insert the ball back in the rope loop to fix the seat in place. The concave bowl forms a peaceful resting place for small birds and animals where they can quench their thirst and relax from their tiring journey.

The versatile swing can be installed in many locations, including playgrounds, parks, community spaces, apartments, or educational centers. Children can learn how to refill the empty bowl with food or water and watch furry and feathered friends drink and feed.

The word Birddy, an amalgamation of the words bird and buddy, reflects companionship with birds. This brilliant concept of the Birddy Swing helps build a mindful connection with nature. Nurturing wildlife educates children about the importance of the harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
