Brendan Berry is a photographer based in England, and recently he has made a huge camera cum portable dark room from an old camper. Yes you read that right! In the world of mobile devices, instant picture uploads (via soial-media platforms) and most anticipated smartphone luanches like the iPhone X; he chose to make a giant Caravan Camera that clicks monochrome photographs. But why, you must be thinking, right? Well, he simply wants people to see the beauty of 1 to 1 life size portraits, and remind them of that golden era.

If we talk about Caravan Camera, it is not Berry’s first big creation. Earlier he had made an Ultra Large Format Camera and Shed Cam too. Those cameras were not portable enough, so he decided to made a big camera from an old caravan, so that he can take it wherever he goes.

First of all to make this camera, Berry bought an old caravan from eBay for £150, and gutted it from inside. After that he painted the camper’s interior in black color, and also designed amazing exteriors of the caravan with the help of his artist friend Patrick Cullum. Berry has built a mount for the lens, and space for the dark room tray on one side of the camper.

When he was done with his building process. He asked the Director of The Boatshed (local pop up art space) to park Caravan Camera outside their campus, so that he can use it to click photos of people passing by. According to Berry, so far, 300 people have experienced Caravan Camera. They stepped inside the Caravan Camera to see the whole process, and happily posed for the portraits he clicked.

The camera has an Apo Nikkor1210mm lens that produces an image circle that covers the entire height and width of the caravan (over 6ft high and 6ft wide). He printed over 100 of the 16×20” paper negative portraits into positives, and also held an exhibition of the prints inside old Maritime Museum near The Boatshed. People were very excited and happy to see the result, and that was truly a reward for him.
