Food waste isn’t the topic that tends to grab the attention of most of us. But you would like to know that about 35 million tons of food goes to landfill every year in the US, and produces a large amount of methane. This is not only harming our environment but our pockets too. Don’t be surprised that about 40% of edible-food goes to waste probably due to bad storage facilities. Well, the Chicago-based startup Ovie has instilled hope with its connected food storage system recently introduced at the CES 2018. Dubbed Ovie Smartterware, it tells how long your leftover food will last.

It is actually an airtight container that helps keeping food fresher for longer. Users are notified through smartphone notifications to consume the leftover food before it degrades.

Currently, Smarterware food storage system works with Amazon Alexa but will be compatible with other smart home speakers in future. The information about how long different foods items tend to last in a fridge is saved to Ovie cloud database. Users are provided with SmartTag that fits into the container, allowing you keep a track of stored food.  The LED light ring on the tag changes color to visually notify the state of a food item.

With the Ovie Smarterware, you can track a food item using your smartphone easily. This technology can really be useful. For instance, it can tell you exactly and for how long your food is healthy to consume. Smarterware even gives you recipe ideas for your leftovers food.

For instance, if you have some leftover bread in one Smarterware container and salad in another, it would suggest you related recipes. The app can suggest you recipes for various summer salad sandwiches too. It also has a sharing feature that allows you to offer your food to your close friends and family members that you aren’t planning to eat.

Ovie plans to crowdfund Smartware this year on Kickstarter, and it is expected to be available at the end of the year. A pack of three buttons will probably cost US$60, that means you have a great chance to get the smart features of Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant at a very affordable price range.

So, don’t miss the opportunity, go on and join the waitlist to get notifications about its availability.
