Snuggled between the lush green environs of California, Crest Guesthouse calls all the nature lovers for their next memorable getaway. Constructed by Mork-Ulnes Architects, the guesthouse with modern facilities was primarily built for the owner’s small family as an alternative dwelling when their main home was being renovated. The house is apt for spending some time close to nature as it now serves as a vacation rental.

Crest House is located on a steep hillside in Marin County, California. The house is built along what the architects describe as the ‘Swiss Army knife approach’ that fosters innovation and adaptability at its core. The dwelling measures 400 sqft and is an example of ingenious planning visible through its architecture and layout. A slanting roof mimics the slope’s topography while the house’s exterior is built from fire-resistant cement board. The interior primarily features wood and foldable furniture to enhance the available space.

A deck allows entry into the house through a glass door that opens into a small living area with a three-seater couch. It has storage underneath and above for displaying decorative items and books. The small table and an adjoining large wardrobe complete this space.

The kitchen features modern appliances including an electric stove, a deep sink, and a storage shelf. Wooden cupboards, drawers, and oven are placed under the countertop for easy access and storage. Lying adjacent to the kitchen is a full bathroom divided into two separate rooms. One door leads to the toilet and a sink while the other door heads straight to the shower.

The highlight of the house is the use of foldable furniture pieces that enhance functionality and space. Between the two bathroom areas lies a rolling kitchen island that doubles as a dining table. It can accommodate four people at once and be moved onto the deck for an al-fresco dining experience. A Murphy bed is nestled between the kitchen and living room. The queen-size bed offers additional sleeping space while it folds back neatly during the day.

A removable wooden ladder takes one to the open loft area, the primary bedroom. Spacious enough for sleeping and lounging during the day, the loft has huge glass windows to keep it bright. Mork-Ulnes Architects’s Crest Guesthouse is lighted and spacious owing to its unique architecture and can be used to unwind from the daily hustles of life.
