Vitra has reintroduced the Eames Fiberglass side chair La Fonda in two colors limited to 250 pieces each. The limited-edition Eames side chair combines the seat shell by Charles and Ray Eames with cushions upholstered with tootstripe fabric by Alexander Girard who was an interior designer.

These chairs are an adaptation of the fiberglass plastic series, which was commissioned by Alexander Girard for a new Mexican restaurant in the now 1271 Avenue of the Americas, formerly known as Time & Life Building in New York that opened in 1961. There were two conditions for the manufacturing of the La Fonda series regarding its stature and design.

Girard stipulated that the chairs must not be larger than the table whereas Charles wanted a pedestal base, containing multiple columns. These conditions led to the creation of the La Fonda series with a height reduced by 3 inches and fully upholstered with Tootstripe fabric designed by Girard for Herman Miller.

Vitra wanted to imply the concept of using a cushion by Alexander in the Eames chair that is aesthetically appealing. Moreover, the fabric used in upholstering adds elegance to its design. The primary captivating aspect of this side chair is its seat shell which is dyed-through, glass-fiber reinforced polyester to protect the color of the chair from small specks of pigmentation.

The two-toned vertical design makes up the classic Tootstripe wool fabric. One of the color combinations in the seat shell is Eames ochre dark with basic dark for the base, and seat cushion upholstered in black/raw umber Tootstripe fabric. The other color palette includes an Eames red-orange seat shell with the base in classic red and the seat cushion upholstered in Toostripe fabric orange dark/crimson dark.

Manufactured with fiberglass and metal, the construction of the chair is highly resistant to bending, tensile, and compression, and resistant to chemical and biological effects. Its armless silhouette makes it sleek and suitable for various small spaces.

The Girard and Eames archives were Vitra’s starting point and inspiration for the limited-edition series of the Eames side chair. The chair is available in two color palettes and numbered metal plates.
