Mounting a TV above a fireplace has long been an aesthetic compromise we’ve all made when doing our home interiors. Either the TV ends up too high for a comfortable viewing angle, or its mount (aftermarket or provided by the manufacturer) is bulky and visibly unappealing. Out of Sight Mounting Solutions, which is preparing to launch on Indiegogo, aims to address this problem with a recessed, mechanical drop-down TV mount that can disappear into the wall when not in use and lower to a preferred viewing angle when needed.
The brainchild of Doug Warren, a self-employed electrician in New Jersey, the mount “sits flush with the wall and extends out so the TV can pivot over the fireplace mantel,” CEPro noted in its 2023 coverage. Almost three years after it first made headlines, Out of Sight Mounting Solutions’ recessed TV mount has been through dozens of prototypes and is now positioned as a perfect solution to over-fireplace TV placement.
According to press information provided to Homecrux, Out of Sight Mounting Solutions is offering a patented recessed TV mounting system built to let large flat TVs – ranging up to 85-inches in size – sit extremely close to the wall or mantel. A key innovation behind the system is its patented pivoting geometry. Unlike traditional drop-down mounts that require TVs to be installed much higher above a mantel to clear depth during motion, Out of Sight Mounting allows TVs to be installed significantly closer, in some cases as little as two inches above the mantel, while still clearing deeper mantels during movement. This results in a more natural viewing height and a far cleaner visual outcome.
With the design and functionality refined, the TV mount is ready to hit the market. It is going live on Indiegogo for crowdfunding starting January 20, offering backers a TV mount that’s functional and aesthetic. Instead of permanently installing a TV high above a fireplace or using visibly unappealing arms and housings, this system allows homeowners to conceal all the mechanics inside the wall in a specially designed enclosure, saving them from unsightly installation.
The mount resembles other drop-down mounting solutions in usability, but it differs from them. It is completely mechanical, and no motors are involved in its functioning. It uses a gas spring-balanced mechanism along with a patented pivoting geometry instead for its smooth lowering. When you’re done watching the TV at a lowered angle, it can retract back up very close to the wall. Out of Sight Mounting Solutions describes this as a ‘picture-frame-like appearance with minimal wall reveal.’
Depending on the home’s construction, the Out of Sight Mounting system can be recessed directly into the wall cavity for an ultra-flush, architectural finish. For homes where cutting into the wall isn’t ideal, such as solid masonry walls or retrofit installs, the system also supports surface-mounted configurations using optional architectural trim kits.
Both recessed and surface-mounted configurations are engineered for strength, safety, and long-term durability when installed according to specifications. The system relies on mechanical balance rather than motors, reducing failure points while ensuring smooth, controlled motion.
