Lamps have graced homes for centuries and hold a significant place in various settings. With the evolution of technology and material, designers are now experimenting with different materials, shapes, techniques, making lamps more apt for contemporary spaces. For instance, sculptural lamp designs have emerged as a popular choice among the buyers. Recently, Copenhagen-based design studio Boris Berlin launched its Flying Lamp for Danish Company, Made By Hand. It is a sculptural pendant lamp reminiscent of famous and wide hats.

With its wavy contours, it looks less like a lamp but more like a piece of sculpture hanging midair. Boris and his team worked closely keeping in mind the product’s sustainability and aesthetics. They crafted the lamp with the 3D knit fabric by stretching it between the aluminum waving frame and the central cord which holds the lighting fixture.

At the center of the design, the built-in LED light is fitted at the top of the lamp. The light is dispersed softly through the knitted fabric to provide a fuzzy, subtle glow. With sustainability at the core, the idea to use the 3D knit fabric is to make the process as waste-less as possible.

The sustainable design also makes it possible for the users to disassemble the product when it needs repairing or can be recycled at the end of its life. It is also flat-packed for easy transportation. The Flying Lamp beautifully blends the art of traditional knitting method with a touch of modernity and the use of contemporary materials by knitting them together into one sculptural design.
